CIvilized Nuclear Power Vs. New Killer Powers EDIT

http://www.grayedgerton.com/illust_politicks.html

This is an illustration that I re-edited, and decided to post in light of the most recent press regarding Nuclear Iran. Via Truthdig:

Last week, the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog agency expressed “serious concerns” over Iran’s nuclear program in a strongly worded report that claimed that there is evidence that Iran might be developing an atomic weapon.  This is the stuff of “fantasyland,” according to The New Yorker’s Seymour Hersh. The investigative journalist appeared on Monday’s “Democracy Now!” broadcast to give his take on the IAEA’s agenda, which he said reminds him of a similar situation in our nation’s not-so-distant past.

Watch the video below to hear Seymour Hersh on Democracy Now!

In the re-edit I also added an oblivious-american character, one of those that get marched off to war with propaganda that makes them believe they are defending freedom.

t-shirt/poster design contest entry (i lost)

Melting Mass Run
2010
30"x 20" inches
Acrylic on Board

This was my entry for the 2011 Cooper River Bridge Run T-Shirt/Poster Design Contest. I didn't win but it was fun squirting this out before the deadline. Maybe next year. You can see the "spectacular" winning design on their website. I still think this would make a cool shirt, no?

Mano Photobox

Mano Photobox
2010
Acrylic on Wood panel
22" x 19" inches

This painting was done from a poloroid photograph that I slid back inside the empty poloroid film cartridge as a frame. I recreated the photo and frame in the painting. This tribute to portraiture plays on photography's role in changing how people's images are recorded and captured. The aesthetic of the poloroid, now out-dated by digital, still holds a strong place in many photographers' and artists' hearts. Traditional painted portraiture is also still highly regarded by some, though a lot of it, is aided by photography. The skin tone in the painting is left the color of the wood panel, leaving the trace of the raw material calling to mind the alchemy of art.

Brooklyn Naval Drawings

Demologos a.k.a. USS Fulton
after a drawing by Samuel Ward Stanton 1895
Ink on Paper

One more in the series of illustrations where I dug up (Googled) old pictures of Brooklyn Naval History and recreated them in ink. Thanks to Robert Fulton for designing the Demologos and Samuel Ward Stanton for drawing it for his book.

ol' melthead compooter

Ol' Melthead makes a return to the blog via Adobe photo/illustrate back-country roads. Sketchbook makes it through the compu in one piece and a nice digital piece it is. Shoot, I'd hire this guy for some design jobs or some shit. Blogs are soo biased. Agree?

handmaid a scene

This is an old doody I did a couple years ago. The handmaid is a handy one to have around. She's really hands on and certainly has a handle on handmade things.

Brooklyn Navy Yard Illustrations #1

USS Arizona leaving Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1915
(after a photo, of course!)
2009
Ink on Paper

This is the first in a series of ink drawings that I did based off old pictures of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Acting upon an idea from an unlikely source, I decided to showcase my drafting skills, drawing some realistic imagery of the history of the place where I live and work. (In ninth grade, I swore to myself that I would never copy pictures again, with the idea that I could always come up with things to create. Ten years later, here I am with this series.)

rattlesnakes n cute lil' field mice (in progress)

Couple pages in progress from the current sketchbook. Our cabin dweller tips in a rocker, squirrel gun trained on the mutant rattler about to swallow him whole. A gang of ratified field mice nibble on the snake and congregate.
